Description

This image captures 3 seldom imaged objects located in close proximity in the constellation of Cepheus at a declination of +60 degrees.

The primary object, on the right, is SH2-156, also known as IC 1470. This object is an emission nebula located 9000 light years away. It spans 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a width of 7 light years. The nebula is primarily hydrogen but has some stronger OIII and SII content at its center.

On the left side of the image is the BDS2003-42 open cluster and the surrounding BFS 18 HII region. As you might be able to infer from the dim glow of the HII region, these objects are much further away than Sh2-156, at a distance of 28,000 light years.

Near the left-center of the image is the Kronberger 23 open cluster and the surrounding BFS 17 HII region. These objects are shown to be the same distance away as Sh2-156, which seems odd to me. The odd looking bright orange star in this cluster is V* QT Cep, which is a Mira-type variable star. These stars are cool red giants, hundreds of times bigger and thousands of times brighter than our sun.
