Description

This Astrobin Debut Object, also known as MCG+08-11-002, is an obscure disturbed spiral galaxy located 260 million light years away in the constellation of Auriga at a declination of +50 degrees. It spans 40 arc-seconds in our apparent view, about the same size as Jupiter currently is in our sky. This object has a diameter of about 55,000 light years.

Scientists believe that this object is a late stage galaxy merger. A strong swirling dust band is visible. The core is diffuse and has wide star stream arms extending out of it. Like many of these objects, I wish we were closer for a better view. It is surprising that Dr. Arp did not include this object in his Peculiar Galaxy Catalog.
