Description

It's great when the weather forecast is wrong...a tale of shooting through the gaps!

Two days ago, I was watching the weather forecast and hoping for an opportunity to shoot the Crab Nebula. However, the forecast was showing 75% coverage for high clouds. So, I was not expecting to be able to shoot that night. However, about 7pm I went outside and used my visual weather forecaster ( my eyes ) and low and behold it was clear...easy to see Orion, Cassiopia, Polaris, Vega, etc...

So, I fired up my AAP and was shooting the Crab Nebula just before 7:30pm. At around 10pm, it needed to do a meridian flip and I stayed up to babysit it. It flipped, re-guided and re-focused with no issues. I just tweaked the focus a little bit better and picked a little stronger guide star and off it went for the remainder of the session.

I set up autorun for a 100 shot session ( Optolong Extreme, ASI183MC Pro and an ED152CF scope ) for 4 minute exposures at bin1, gain 111 and -10C cooled temp.

After starting again after the flip, I went to bed. It continued to run but I found out that on the 53 shot, high clouds did roll back in because shots 53 - 100 all looked like some kind of flats/darks combination.

With the 52 good shots, I processed them in PI and here is the result.

The moral of the story is don't believe every weather forecast and shoot through the holes!
