Description

What's a supernova? When a star finishes its fuel a process leading to its death will take place. This process may change, according to the star's mass. If it is at least nine solar's mass, a massive explosion will happen. This will liberate as much energy as the sun's entire life in only a couple of weeks/months. The shockwave scatters heavy element around, at extremely high speed (10% of the light speed).

This material permits the creation of new stars and the enrichment of the space with heavy chemical elements, this take the name: "supernova remnant".

In this picture we can see the western Veil nebula (known as C34 or NGC 6960). It's in the Cygnus constellation, 1470 light years away. The visible beam light is one circumference arch in the center of which a supernova explosion occured. It's likely that in few millennia this matter will scatter and be no longer available to our telescopes.
