Description

This beautiful spiral galaxy is located 30 million light years away in the constellation of Leo at a declination of +21 degrees.  It is a magnitude 9 galaxy which spans 13 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  The main disk is 90,000 light years wide.

We are seeing this galaxy about 30 degrees from edge-on.  This galaxy is the 32nd brightest galaxy in the sky.  It is as bright as many of the Messier galaxies but for some reason did not make that list.

This is a colorful galaxy with many pink HII regions, blue star clouds, brown dust lanes and an obscured yellow barred core.  The arm structure is difficult to trace – I count 4 major arms each extending out for 360 degrees from the bar, but it is tough to be sure about that.

The small companion galaxy UGC 5086 is seen at the left edge of the image as a faint ball of light.
