Description

This has been a very challenging image to capture and process - firstly an extraordinarily stormy winter, and then secondly the dominance of dark nebula combined with a 'barely' sufficient data set. I was intrigued by the faint reflection nebula abutted against the dark nebula with its sinuous interface that I had seen in widefield images of this region. To add some spice to the capture strategy I had to take account of the bright shining beacon of Atik. So I dispensed with 600s luminance subs and decided on 300s only; if I had had more confidence in the weather I would have taken both 600s and 300s subs for a final blended luminance. In the end I managed to capture 32 x 300s each RGB channel, 42 x 300s luminance, and 13 x 600s Ha, but did not use any of the Ha as it just showed data for the stars.

The image certainly could benefit from both more data and also a slightly wider FOV I think. My framing resulted in about 40% of the frame with dark nebula relatively devoid of stars. I have in the end cropped a chunk of this off and also a thin sliver around the remaining edges too. Thanks to Steve Milne for some constructive feedback as I had been nursing the processing for too long and had lost perspective.
