Description

Montemor-o-Novo (Portugal)

The galaxies M65 (on the left), M66 (on the bottom) and NGC 3628 (on the top) form a trio about 35 million light years away that can be observed in the direction of the constellation of Leo.

The M65 (NGC 3623), of magnitude 9.3, surface brightness of 12.8 and with apparent dimensions of 8x1.5 minutes of arc, was discovered in 1780 by Charles Messier. It is a Sa-type galaxy whose luminous disk is dominated by an old star population, although some areas of the disk may be associated with regions of star formation (small white nodules that can be seen in the image).

The M66 (NGC 3627) was discovered in 1780 by Charles Messier. Of magnitude 8.9, surface brightness of 12.7 and type Sb, it clearly presents spiral arms deformed by the gravitational interaction with its neighboring galaxies. Although its dimensions (8x2.5 minutes of arc) are approximately the same, the M66 is brighter and better defined than the M65. The spiral arms show clouds of dust and nebulae, signs of star formation.

NGC 3628 was discovered by William Herschel in 1784. It is the least bright of the trio (magnitude 9.5, surface brightness of 13.4 and type Sb) but, in our opinion, the most interesting. It is a galaxy placed in profile in relation to our line of sight and where it is possible to observe a disc of dust clearly distorted in the external regions due to the gravitational action of the neighboring galaxies, M65 and M66.

In the image it is also possible to glimpse four more small galaxies: IC 2694, IC 2708, IC 2745 and IC 2776, of magnitudes, respectively, 15.1, 14.5, 15.1 and 15.3.
