Description

NGC 1316 and NGC 1317 - Fornax A and Fornax B. These galaxies appear to be interacting but Fornax B does not appear to be disrupted in any way, in contrast to Fornax A which has a large field of diffuse stars around it. The presence of large dust lanes and the wide envelope of stars surrounding it all suggest instead that Fornax A is the product of a  merger of two gas-rich galaxies in the distant past. Its violent history is also characterised by the presence of strong radio emissions, making it is one of the strongest and largest radio sources in the sky. The galaxies are in the constellation Fornax about 75 million light years away and are ideally placed for me to image right now, so i might try to get more data to bring out the complex ripples and plumes of gas, dust and stars which surround the galaxy later on.
