Gum 17 (with Gum 15)

The primary objects here are 2 hydrogen emission nebulae located 3,000 light years away in the southern constellation of Vela at a declination of -42 degrees. They are the 15th and 17th entries in the southern hemisphere HII catalog developed by Colin Gum in Australia and published in 1955.

The smaller nebula is Gum 15. The bright multiple star in the center of the nebula is HD 74804, the brightest star of the Collinder 197 cluster and the main star responsible for ionizing the nebula. I like the bright arc on the left side and the dark dust lane on the right side (and above).

The larger nebula is Gum 17. It is believed to be ionized by the brightest central star HD 75759, a magnitude 6 binary.

Several other objects are also seen in the image:
- NGC 2671 is a small 12th magnitude open star cluster, located further away (at about 5000 light years) than the nebulae. This cluster has over 100 stars.
- Gum 19 is the small bright HII nebula seen in the lower left corner.
- Kohoutek 2-15 is the small bright circular HII nebula seen to the bottom right of Gum 17. This is one of many HII objects which have been mistakenly classified as a planetary nebula years ago.

If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
