Description

This object is an open star cluster located 1300 light years away in the constellation of Serpens at a declination of +5 degrees. The cluster spans 40 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 15 light years.

I messed up on this object. I originally tried it with a wider FOV, but I felt that the cluster was lost in the background and not distinctive. So I chose a narrower FOV which just barely frames the object. You can see the cluster stars well but there is not enough background to properly frame the object. I should have just gone with the wider FOV. I will image this object properly sometime in the future.

This cluster is a naked eye object in dark skies, at a magnitude of 4.3. Even though it is a naked eye object, it went undiscovered for a long time because the cluster is so wide and bright that, for the telescopes of most obervers (like myself above), the cluster just looks like another rich Milky Way star field.
