Description

This Astrobin Debut Object, also known as Markarian 848, is a pair of interacting galaxies located 0.5 billion light years away in the constellation of Bootes at a declination of +43 degrees.  It is a magnitude 15 object which spans 40 arc-seconds in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a size similar to our Milky Way, about 120,000 light years in length.

Despite the distance, the 2 cores are easily distinguished, both bright yellow.  The blue star stream tails are also clear to see.  This object looks like many of the other objects in my collection of Merging Galaxies Stage C (Cores Touching).
