Sombrero NGC 4594 (M104) with RC8

Well, my wife, who takes my astronomy with a grain of salt, surprised me when she said wow to my "UFO", better known as the Sombrero. That was worth 10,000 Astrobin likes.

This is my first attempt at the Sombrero. I'm was hoping to capture more high quality luminance data, but the weather isn't cooperating. Also the Sombrero is a bit of a challenge from my site because of my house and trees, so I tend to only capture Sombrero data interstitially with my main targets being further south. A final version may be years away; as new data trickles in.

Capture Details

Total Capture data was actually 29.8 hours over 24 separate sessions equating to 894 subframes:

• 11.0 hours of all captures from 10 sessions were discarded directly ("low quality")

• 10.2 hours of better quality data from 14 part sessions was also discarded ("insufficient quality")

• 8.6 hours from the 14 sessions were ultimately integrated with weighting ("excellent quality")

Resolution vs Seeing

At 200mm (7.9") such a telescope just resolves under the best possible average seeing. So larger apertures can collect more photons in a given amount of time but don't resolve/yield more detail. Of course you need to be operating at the right arcsec/pixel resolution, have things collimated, mount tracking well, etc. At times the seeing at my site is exceptional and so the results can be surprisingly good.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
