Description

This pair of Astrobin Debut Objects is located in the southern constellation of Pisces Austrinus at a declination of -33 degrees.  The pair are not related, but each galaxy displays unique ring structures as they seem to try to outdo each other for us.

NGC 7187 is the beautiful orange face-on double ringed lenticular galaxy at upper left, located 125 million light years away. The faint outer ring of this galaxy is very hard to see.  It spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 100,000 light years.

LEDA 67880 is the blue barred grand design spiral galaxy at lower right, located 200 million light years away. This galaxy spans 1.3 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 80,000 light years.  This galaxy is more disturbed than it may appear at first, with a bent upper arm as it leaves the core and numerous star clouds in the outer disk.   I am fascinated by the faint pseudo-ring which appears as an oval superimposed over the spiral galaxy.  The oval ring appears to be oriented at an angle to the arms.
