Description

Gum 5, or Sharpless 2-301, represented in SHO with RGB stars. Something of a modest sized, faint nebula in the constellation Canis Major. Unlike other nebulas in this region, this nebula actually responded well to the [SII] filter (albeit still very faint) and thus a full SHO Hubble palette was possible. Because of the clear January skies in Western Australia, I managed to acquire a lot of narrowband data (~56hrs between all filters after culling them down) plus some short RGB exposures to add some star color. After processing the data over a few nights, I was pleased with how this one came out with the [OIII]-rich core surrounded by an arc of Ha/[SII] and a faint, diffuse outer nebulosity region.
