Description

This planetary nebula is located 3000 light years away in the constellation of Hydra at a declination of -34 degrees.  It is a magnitude 12.6 PN which spans 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 3 light years. The object is classified as part of the Kohoutek planetary nebula catalog and is sometimes called the Southern Owl planetary nebula.

The nebula is primarily OIII, although a strong rim of HII exists in the top part of the nebula.  I like the subtle bipolar structure seen in the central region.  The blue progenitor star is clearly seen, a bit off-center to the upper left.
