Description

I have always been fascinated by the Hubble Space Telescope’s “Pillars of Creation” photograph. When beginning astrophotography, I always dreamed of shooting it in the same narrow band wavelengths.
I tried last year but didn’t get nearly enough exposures. Over the past two weeks I finally got enough exposures from my backyard, but my first attempt at processing the data left me underwhelmed. The pillars were all washed out and lacking details. At first I assumed my telescope lacked the focal length needed.
However, I have learned is M16 (The Eagle Nebula) is a lot like Orion Nebula, processing takes finesse and the bright center can easily be over exposed. Meaning if you have a wide shot the histogram stretch will blow out the details.
This time I cropped in the center of the nebulosity (where the Pillars are) and processed my stretches slowly on the Starless Ha, Sii, ans Oiii files separately. Then merged them together in RGB Channel Combination before adding the stars back. This approach was much more enjoyable.
