Description

The 2012 APOD of the Northern Trifid by Adam Block describes this region as a reflection nebula and not an emission nebula like the southern Trifid. The light from a massive young star is scattered thus the reddish color. Other descriptions of the Northern Triffid, including Wikipedia, call this area an HII region (emission). I am not sure which description is correct. Let me know if you have a good online source for the technical details of astronomical objects. I could certainly use a better reference.

I acquired the first data for this image using 120 second subs. But once I started putting it together, I realized I didn't go deep enough as I was just starting to make out the dark dust lanes but they looked mottled. The conditions were decent for the new moon so I acquired a new set of 300 sec subs over 3 evenings. I tried combining the 120 second subs with the 300 second subs, but the combination although less noisy looked washed out. In the end I threw out the 120 sec subs to produce this image.
