Description

I thought I'd have another crack at this and get more of the popular elephant trunk than I did last time. In the past I have also imaged this with my SCT (at around 800 mm FL) and with the help of published references described the protostars that are burning holes in this molecular dust pillar. Extraordinary that intense radiation from HD 206267 (to the right of the pillar) is responsible for all this. Lying 2,400 LY away it is an easy target and looks good in narrowband filters.

Here, my L-eNhance dual/tri band filter with predominantly 3m exposures and 3 x 10m exposures. Apart from the increased signal, tracking looked exactly the same (imperfect as always in my star tracker mount, but pretty amazing given all). I like the depth and generally the star colour and UV glow around the pillar.

Anyway here it is, warts 'n all, in 2 hours 40' under a brightening moon.
