Description

Sh2-196

A Tale of a Sharpless Off of a Tail

Sh2-196 is located in the eastern part of the constellation Cassiopeia, about one and a half degrees northeast of the great nebula IC 1805. It is located just off of the long arm extending off of the Heart Nebula. It's usually not captured along side of the Heart Nebula due to the focal length and pixel scale it takes to get the long tail within the field of view. It is a rosette-shaped H II region, located at a distance of about 3200 parsecs (10430 light years).

I tried my best to do it justice by bringing out as much detail as possible. There is an interesting pillar coming off the top of Sh2-196 in my image.

In the lower right corner is a frame of reference where it is nestled along side of the long arm of The Heart Nebula. This image was captured by my friend TJ Connolly.
