Description

This object is a large emission nebula located 1800 light years away in the constellation of Cygnus at a declination of +44 degrees. The nebula spans 2 degrees in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual width of 60 light years. The nebula is located about 2 degrees west of the North America Nebula.

The red Ha nebulosity appears as a thick ring around the 5th magnitude bright blue star (HD 203064 - 68 Cyg). The central region of this ring is dominated by OIII, which is why it shows up as blue in the image. I like the look of the bright blue star with the blue OIII nebulosity and the red Ha nebulosity. Many small detailed dark nebulae are seen in the upper left. These include LDN objects 942 through 953. The rich starfield background is very colorful.

It is believed that this nebula could be a Strömgren sphere, similar to the Rosette Nebula. Such an object is a sphere of ionized hydrogen surrounding a very hot young star of the spectral classe O or B.

Two tiny planetary nebulae are faintly seen in the image. We 2-245 is the small patch of red nebulosity just to the left of image center, and Ou 5 is the small patch of blue nebulosity 2/3 of the way from image center to the lower left corner of the image.
