Description

I did this test more in the spirit of "what the heck, let's give it a try" rather than actually expecting any decent result coming out of it. Firstly, because I thought focusing at f/1.4 (note however that this lens is focused electronically even when in manual mode) would bring nothing but woes and secondly, because at f/1.4 not even the Nikon Noct was doing too well and this lens is no 3k $ homongously large and heavy 50mm prime lens. And Viltrox ain't no Nikon.

It turned out that focusing at f/1.4 was rather easy, in fact far easier than focusing at f/2.2 as subsequent tests eventually revelead. The central spot PSF quality left me flabbergasted with average FWHM in the 2 pixels range. Control of the dreaded purple halo is rather well done with only a minor amount of lateral chromatic aberration up to mid field (this has been left untreated in the image). Beyond this inner circle of 12-14mm things starts to rapidly unfold with some field curvature present and then very strong field coma taking over as the main aberration with huge "wings" at the very corners. Correcting for light drop-off at those very croner was a loosing battle and flat-fielding at this fast releative aperture presents a number of hurdles that I have yet to overcame (mostly because the way the Fujifilm XT-1 works). Yet, when all is said and done, the optical quality in this 14mm central sweet spot are unbelievable even more so considering the cost of this lens. If the subject fits well within the sweet spot I see no reasosn not to give it a go.
