Description

Maa 1 -The Hazy Pearl Nebula

Discovered in August 2022, the PN candidate Maa 1 is a shy fellow. In the constellation Cygnus it hides in a sea of stars and behind interwoven veils of ionized gas, of the supernova remnant SNR G65.3 + 5.7. This SNR is a huge, self-contained structure about 4.2° x 4.2°. The new discovery Maa 1is located at about 10 o'clock direction in the greenblue outer layers of the SNR in the image below.

The southern and northwestern regions of the SNR are reasonably well known as Sh2-91, Sh2-94, and Sh2-96. However, the very rarely photographed northeast corner is in no way inferior to the other parts of the SNR. It is at least as photogenic as the rest of the SNR and even holds a small treasure. On the emission line of the Halpha and a bit fainter in the OIII a small spherical nebula object glows there, which is almost invisible behind the prominent gas arcs of the supernova remnant and the many stars in this area.

There is no sign of the small nebula in the broadband data. Also on the SII line no significant signal was found. In Halpha and OIII, however, a well-defined spheroid of about 69" diameter appears. The superposition with the emissions of SNR G65.3 + 5.7 gives a pearly impression in the HOO composit image which led me to the choice of the name Hazy Pearl Nebula.

The Hazy Pearl Nebula aka Maa 1 aka PN-G: 066.8+05.5

A possible Central Star (Pan-STARRS IRG)

The discovery was made by chance in the summer of 2022 when I followed the emission structures of Sh2-91 and Sh2-96 further to the east. After discovering the object, I joined an even more easterly image section to get it in the center of the image. Therefore image versions D through F are 2-panel mosaics with a size of 7832x3940 pixels.

The Hazy Pearl Nebula was registrated as a newly discovered object in the list of the planetarynebulae.net and the HASH database in early November 2022 as a PN candidate named Maa1 / PN-G: 066.8+05.5. In connection with the application and registration in the international databases, which is not an easy thing for a novice discoverer like me, my special thanks go to Marcel Drechsler and Pascal Le Dû for their support and efforts. The nature of the object as an actual PN and the existence of the central star have yet to be confirmed by further investigation, which may take some time.
