Description

This planetary nebula, also known as PK346.9+12.4 and Kohoutek 1-3, is located 2000 light years away in the constellation of Scorpius at a declination of -32 degrees.  It is the 4th most southern Abell PN and has a magnitude of 16.  It spans 2.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a fairly typical PN diameter of 1.5 light years.

The nebula is dominated by HII with very little OIII present.  I do not see a progenitor star.  The HII elliptical ring is distorted, likely by interaction with the ISM.

This object looks very similar to Abell 13:

but Abell 13 has less ISM distortion.
