Description

This object is a galaxy group located 360 million light years away in the constellation of Eridanus at a declination of -18 degrees.   It is unusual to have 5 NGC galaxies in such a tight framing.  Although they are called a group, they are not near to each other and are not interacting.

The brightest galaxy in the group, Hickson 100a, is also known as NGC 1099.  This magnitude 14 galaxy spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a large diameter of 180,000 light years.  I like the disk structure of this galaxy and the color of its nuclear ring.

Several interesting faint galaxies are in the background of the group.
