Description

The Whirlpool Galaxy (M51)

--------------------

At a distance of about 25 million light-years away, lies an impressive pair of interacting galaxies.

M51 and NGC 5195, seen at the center of this image, are two galaxies 'locked' in a cosmic gravitational dance.

M51 is a spiral galaxy also known as the 'Whirlpool' Galaxy.

The interaction between the two galaxies is thought to have caused increased star formation across the dark-brown regions of concentrated dust and gas, called 'spiral arms'.

This image was created using 11.5 hours of data I collected throughout 5 nights in May 2020.
