Description

I was afraid I wouldn't get to capture this before Christmas. The weather has been cloudy and rainy, and the only clear night was the Full Moon, too close this object. Luckily, the forecast changed and I got a "gift" of another clear night last night, on the one year anniversary of the night I decided to dive back into astrophotography.

I have the added wrinkle of an obstructed view which means I can't see Monoceros or Orion before they are about 40-45 degrees altitude. I don't like to image below 30 anyway, but that costs me at least an hour. Given that I only had one night to capture this data I'm quite pleased with how it turned out.

I tried a lot of different ways to combine the SHO data for this, and honestly many of them looked good. It was hard to choose. What you see is a blend of about 75% of one and 50% of another, tweaked and adjusted based upon what looked good to me. I didn't have enough Oiii signal, and I would have gotten zero reflection nebula signal if I'd tried (Bortle 8 skies and still a very strong Moon) so I wasn't going to try to squeeze too much blue out of this.
