Description

This object is an edge-on lenticular galaxy located 60 million light years away in the constellation of Virgo at a declination of -22 degrees. The outer reaches of this galaxy span 9 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 160,000 light years.

I find this object to be fascinating. My favorite part is the shape of the galaxy brightness, which looks to me a bit like a Celtic cross on its side. The central bulge flares up and down in dramatic fashion. Left to right, the disk brightness is both symmetric but also a bit warped. I don’t think I have seen another galaxy quite like it.

The galaxy at lower right is PGC 46489, which is much closer and much smaller. The faint galaxy to the left, PGC 823295, is extremely interesting in its “X” shape, but I could find no information about it.
