Description

The California Nebula, NGC 1499 is an emission nebula located in the constellation Perseus, approximately 1,500 light years from Earth. It resembles the state of California.  It is almost 2.5° long in the sky, or 5 full moons, with an actual length of 100 light years.  The California Nebula shines with a reddish glow from hydrogen atoms recombining with lost electrons. The electrons have been stripped away, ionized by energetic starlight of O7 star, Xi Persei, also known as Menkib

The California Nebula was discovered by E. E. Barnard in 1884.
