Description

Back in July, one of the followers of my Facebook page, Brian Sheets, offered to let me use some time on his near-Earth-object and supernova hunting rig to take pretty pictures! It's in some relatively dark skies in Utah, and consists of a 14-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain with a SBIG STL-1001e CCD camera that has absolutely massive 24-micron pixels. It took me a while to make some time to figure out the scheduler and choose a target, but I finally did that, and we're starting to take images!

We took just the luminance frames before deciding that the first target I picked was a little too low for his observatory (after the ACP scheduler didn't run it for several nights that were clear), but I went ahead and processed it anyway to get a first glimpse at what I could get out of the system. I was uncertain how much detail I'd be able to get out of such massive pixels, but it came out quite nice! I've got some processing artifacts that are different in CCD cameras than the CMOS cameras I'm used to to learn how to deal with, but I'm looking forward to it.
