Description

This object is a galaxy group located 200 million light years away in the constellation of Pegasus at a declination of +20 degrees. The right large galaxy is NGC 7769, the left large galaxy is NGC 7771, and the satellite just below this galaxy is NGC 7770. The disks of each of the large galaxies span just over 1 arc-minute in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 80,000 light years. However, the extended star streams of each galaxy are up to three times this wide.

There is so much that I love about these objects - the colors of each galaxy, the interesting core structures, the disturbed disks of each galaxy, the beautiful spiral arms, and of course the extended star streams, especially of NGC 7771. Its star streams look somewhat like extensions of the galaxy arms, but studies show that these extensions contain no young stars and so are likely tidal streams and not part of the arms.

I also like the 3 more distant galaxies in the background. In particular, the face-on grand spiral galaxy PGC 72612 at the top of the image seems to be presiding over the whole scene with a watchful eye. This galaxy is 700 million light years away, 3.5 times as far as away as the subject galaxies.
