Description

Abell 50, also known as NGC 6742, is one of only 4 Abell planetaries in the NGC/IC catalogs. It is a very small and bright planetary nebula located in Draco. It's visual size is 24 arc seconds or .4 arc minutes, about the same apparent width to us as the planet Jupiter. So even with my resolution of 0.44 arcsec/pixel, this PN is very tiny. It is located 17,000 light years away in the constellation of Draco and actual diameter is 2 light years.

I added Ha and Oiii to the RGB for this image, but there is really no need to take Ha and Oiii for this PN. The Oiii and Ha are so strong that pure RGB gives a good image of the PN, as we can see from image A. Adding the Ha and Oiii allows a stronger image of the nebula, however, just additional stretching using a mask of the PN can accomplish the same thing.

We can make out a 20th magnitude central star, which may be energizing this PN, and it may be blue. But we can't tell what color it is because the strong Ha and Oiii wash out the embedded stars.
