Description

An HaRGB image of the Orion Nebula.  The extracted detail is aided by the use of Russell Croman's new PixInsight deconvolution process module plugin "BlurXTerminator" followed with David Payne's/Mike Cranfield's super PixInsight utility "GeneralisedHyperbolicStretch" - this is a very powerful combination in bringing out both detail and extensive fainter nebula/dust.  An emphasis was placed on showcasing the dusty areas that surround the nebula.  The Running Man Nebula's distinct RGB structure as well as M42's bright core was overwhelmed when Ha was added as Lum (even after combining 30/60/180sec subs with HDR Composition), so my limited Photoshop skills were employed to blend the RGB details with the Ha structure.

The Orion Nebula is about 1300 light years away and is estimated to be 24 light years across.  It is part of a much larger nebula structure - the Orion molecular cloud complex which includes Barnard's Loop, the Horsehead Nebula, M43, M78 and the Flame Nebula.  On the right side of the image is a wispy arc of nebula - Herbig-Haro 222 (HH-222) also known as the Waterfall Nebula.  This mysterious structure is about 10 light years long with filaments that appear to converge on a bright but unusual non-thermal radio source.

Taken over several nights:  Nov 10, 23-24; Dec 2 and 4, 2022.
