Description

This image captures a chain of 20 galaxies located 400 million light years away in the constellation of Hercules at a declination of +39 degrees.

This field of view, 1/3 of a degree wide, is the central region of the large 90 member galaxy cluster that is Abell 2199, which is 1.5 degrees wide in total.  The largest and brightest galaxy in this chain is NGC 6166.  It is surprising to me that NGC 6166 is the only NGC object in this field of view.

There is a lot going on with this elliptical galaxy.  At the center is the bright quasar 3C 338.  As you might expect, this galaxy is huge at a diameter of 250,000 light years, twice as large as our Milky Way.  The 2 bright regions to the left of the core are 2 smaller elliptical galaxies.

Most of the galaxies in this image are about the same distance away as NGC 6166.  It is easy to imagine NGC 6166 continuing to grow in size as it gobbles up the galaxies nearby.
