Description

NGC 4949 is a massive galaxy, and not too far away at about 13 million light years. But it's probably not the most photogenic! Maybe this is not it's best angle, and the abundance of brown dust seems to obscure much of the spiral structure.

I have blended 5 minute and 2 minute colour subs to help retain star colours. Likewise, I have blended 5 minute, 30 second and 10 second luminance subs to help manage the dynamic range across the galaxy and starfield.

Terry Robinson's image of this galaxy 2 years ago is spectacular, as is the more recent ChileScope version by Xing Keyu. My humble attempt does not come close to either, but I'm happy to have improved from my previous suburban backyard attempts.

Thanks for looking!
