Description

This obscure Astrobin Debut Object is a grand design spiral galaxy located in the constellation of Leo at a declination of -3 degrees. It is about 360 million light years away. This galaxy spans 1.4 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a large diameter of 140,000 light years. I saw a rough view of this galaxy in the Aladin sky atlas program and I decided to image it to see it in more detail.

I see some disturbance in the galaxy disk. Each of the 2 major arms has Vorontsov-Velyaminov rows. Two additional “arm segments” are seen, neither of which seem to connect well with the main arm structure. A star stream tail extends to the bottom right.

No obvious companions are seen which may have caused this disturbance, although the bright area to the right and below the core looks suspicious to me, as does the stellar-like object at the end of the extended star stream to the lower right.
