Description

IC 447 (and friends) is a large reflection nebula located in the Constellation of Monoceros. Beautiful blue glow immersed in the sorrounding H-alpha emission; coupled with dark nebula on the northwest, this field offers a rich view.

In astronomy, reflection nebulae are clouds of interstellar dust which might reflect the light of a nearby star or stars. The energy from the nearby stars is insufficient to ionize the gas of the nebula to create an emission nebula, but is enough to give sufficient scattering to make the dust visible.

H-alpha (Hα) emission is the red visible spectral line created by a hydrogen atom when an electron falls from the third lowest to second lowest energy level.  This transition corresponds to a wavelength of 656.28 nm (red light) and is the first transition in the Balmer series.

dark nebula  is a type of interstellar cloud, particularly molecular clouds, that is so dense that it obscures the visible wavelengths of light from objects behind it, such as background stars and emission or reflection nebulae.
