Description

Widefield view of Sharpless 171 and its surroundings

This wide-field image covers various nebulae, star clusters, and a supernova remnant.

SH2-171: Sharpless 171 is a high northern object that is popular among Astrophotographers mainly because it has a nice structure and picks up well in any imaging system. This Sharpless object also includes the nebula that is north (to the left in this image) that is not part of SH2-171. NGC 7822 is the large loop to which this entire area is usually referred.
SH2-170(Small Rosette Nebula): Located close to the much more prominent NGC 7822, this small Sharpless object is not a common imaging target. Sh 2-170 is in the vicinity of the Cas OB5 supershell and about 10 000 l.y. away.

CTB-1(Abell 85): CTB 1 is a supernova remnant (SNR) in the constellation Cassiopeia and a source of optical, radio, and X-ray emissions. A recent study reports that a pulsar was born from the supernova that produced CTB 1 and ejected into the galaxy, traveling at a velocity exceeding 1000 km/s. Don't be fooled with its alternative name Abell 85 because a galaxy cluster is also named Abell 85.

Sh2-173 (Mayer 1): is an emission nebula in the constellation of Cassiopeia. It is an H II region with a diameter of 77 light-years, located at a distance of about 8800 light-years. Sh2-173 is also nicknamed “Phantom of the Opera”: indeed this name can be derived from its resemblance to a theatrical ghost mask.
