Description

Selected as NASA's APOD October 6, 2022

This image of ngc4631 "The Whale Galaxy", shows a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici.  This side-on distorted galaxy has the appearance of a whale.   There is an intense central starburst revealing a star forming region.  This interesting galaxy is some 30 million ly distant from Earth.

Image data was 30 x 300s Luminance1x1; 12 x 600s each RGB binned 2x2.

Imaged from the Sagrada Observatory, Las Cruces, New Mexico.  Average seeing conditions.  Telescope: 24"RC  Camera: FLI-PL-09000 Gen-II Filters.
