Description

The galaxies in the image, belonging to the Ursa Major constellation, are the Bode galaxy (M81) (center) and the Cigar galaxy (M82) (top right).

The former is 11,740,000 light years away and contains around 250 billion stars. The Cigar galaxy is 11.5 million light years away and is affected by the tidal forces of the first which cause a sharp increase in star formations.

Currently divided by about 200,000 light years, in the past, about 250 million years ago, they had a close encounter which caused a sharp spike in star formations on both galaxies. They belong to the M81 Group, made up of 34 galaxies in the Ursa Major and Giraffe constellations.
