Description

This object is an emission/reflection/dark nebula complex located about 4,000 light years away in the constellation of Sagittarius at a declination of -24 degrees. I usually image with north up, but for this image north is right. This framing is the only way to capture all of these interesting objects with this setup.

This object is located in the southern sky just 1 degree east of the Lagoon Nebula (M8). In fact, it may be an eastern extension of it.

The more I study the image, the more I see - the dense colorful star background shining through this dusty region of space, the bright bulbous reddish circular Ha areas, the interesting bluish reflection nebulae, the dark dust river running through the center of the image, the bright ionization front at upper left, and the small planetary nebula (M 1-41 / PK 6-2.1) at far left.

Despite different definitions in programs like SIMBAD, I believe that Sh2-29 refers to the entire center/left of the image.  Sh2-31 is the circular HII region at upper right, and Sh2-32 is the circular HII region at far right.
