Description

M33, the Triangulum Galaxy. It is so named because of its location in the Triangulum Constellation, one of the classical 48 constellations listed by Ptolemy ca. 150 CE.

It’s about 3 million light years away, and is estimated to contain 40 billion stars. The blues and reds are regions of active star formation. The bright spot called NGC 604 is the most active known star formation region within the “big three” in our local galaxy group (Milky Way/Andromeda/Triangulum).

The outer halo and the inner core have very different compositions, which is thought to be a result of hydrogen being used up in the core faster than it condenses to form stars in the limbs – an instance of “inside-out” galaxy formation.
