Description

This is IC4603, a reflection nebula located in the Southern part of the constellation Ophiuchus, just North of Antares. There isn't a lot of information on this one that I can find other than that it is approximately 443 light years from our solar system. A small bit of IC4606 (another more reddish nebula in the region) is visible in the lower right hand corner as well.

If I were given the opportunity to name this one, I would have called it the "Skunk Nebula" for two reasons. First, it kind of looks "smelly" like a skunk.

Second, I had a skunk visit me while I was imaging this one at my Grandmother-in-law's lake house near Del Rio, TX. This was the first time I ever chose to completely abandon my equipment to the elements (also I believe that this was my first time ever to run a sub 5 second 40 yard dash). Luckily the skunk lumbered up, had a sniff, and then lumbered off towards the lake. I've been visited by opossums, raccoons, and rats while imaging but this skunk was definitely the most interesting (and surprising) guests I've ever entertained

Description: My good friend and colleague Christoph Lichtblau graciously offered to help me improve my original IC4603. He was able to bring out rich detail and beautiful color. All of the processing credit on this revision goes to him! Thanks Christoph!
