Description

This object is a beautiful open cluster of stars located 10,000 light years away in the constellation of Cepheus. Its apparent size to us of 7 arc-minutes corresponds to a diameter of 20 light years.

I like how distinct the cluster stands out from the sky background in both brightness and color. It is interesting that the uppermost bright star of the cluster is white while the rest are orange.

There is a fair amount of background HII in this part of the sky. In fact, the emission region faintly seen in the upper right quadrant of the image is part of the Lobster Claw Nebula (Sh2-157).
