Description

M42 is a fascinating region exhibiting massive star formation. It's radius is about 12 light years, providing an apparent diameter of 1° equal to twice the apparent Moon diameter. It has a mass of about 2,000 times that of the Sun and if you are not impressed by this figure I don't know what can impress you.
It has been photographed for the first time in 1880 by Henry Draper.

These are old data from 2017, never processed before. The night was quite humid, the OIII signal a mess, with Hatysa provoking a massive super halo. I finally decided to just publish the Ha layer which is quite impressive. Usually this nebula is better imaged by LRGB as the dusty regions around the core have more BB signal than NB. So this is not a top pick but maybe the top of the bottom picks . At least I did not saturate the core
