NGC 5765

This object is a pair of interacting galaxies located 400 million light years away in the constellation of Virgo at a declination of +5 degrees. The main portion of each galaxy spans about 30 arc-seconds in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 60,000 light years. Beyond this region, the star streams of each galaxy each extend for almost 200,000 light years.

NGC 5765A, at the top, is a red-tinted nearly edge-on spiral galaxy with a large dark central dust lane and a large star stream tail to the right. NGC 5765B, at the bottom, is a blue-tinted nearly face-on spiral galaxy with an oddly squarish bright central region and a star stream tail downward.

This object is believed to be in the early stages of a merger. The disks are not yet distorted much, yet the star streams are very large.
