Description

NGC 281, aka the Pac-Man Nebula, is an emission nebula located in the constellation of Cassiopeia. Of note in this nebula are several "Bok globules" - small dark nebulae containing gas and dust where stars are being formed. This nebula is roughly 20 x 30 arc minutes, or about the size of a full moon.

Many people are no doubt familiar with the arcade game Ms. Pac-Man from which the name of this nebula is derived. I never played this game at an arcade, but my parents did buy me an 8 bit ZX Spectrum computer in high school (the rough equivalent of a Commodore 64) and Ms. Pac-Man was one of my favorite games to play. This was imaged across five nights in late August/early September.

This is a narrow band image rendered in the straight Hubble palette - hydrogen is mapped to green, sulfur to red, and oxygen emissions to blue, with color adjustments to reduce the strength of the dominant green.
