Description

NGC 507 is the bright, large elliptical galaxy located a bit to the left and below the bright star that occupies the center of this image. Located about 200 million light years away, NGC 507 is the central galaxy of the group that stretches in a chain diagonally from the upper left of the image toward the lower right. Another concentration of galaxies can be seen in the upper, central portion of the image, centered on the bright elliptical galaxy NGC 499. This concentration might be a distinct galaxy group that has merged, or is in the process of merging, with the NGC 507 Group. The NGC 507 Group is part of the Pisces Galaxy Cluster, which itself is part of the Perseus-Pisces Supercluster.

High-resolution images of NGC 507 show it to comprise several concentric shells of slightly varying density. This structure is thought to be the result of numerous galactic mergers that occurred in NGC 507's past. The data for my image was collected on a night of poorer-than-average seeing for my location, so these shells are not resolved in my image. Nicely resolved, however, are the arms of barred spiral galaxy NGC 494 (located below and to the right of the image's central star), and the arms of barred spiral NGC 495 (located to the right of NGC 499).
