Description

This bright emission nebula catalogued as IC1318A is commonly called the Dolphin Nebula. It is one of three bright patches making up the much larger Gamma Cygni nebula complex, IC1318 in the constellation Cygnus. Parts B and C form the Butterfly Nebula.

In the extreme upper right corner (view full resolution) is a lucky catch of a small planetary nebula (the blue halo-like structure), Pa 6, discovered by Dana Patchick, the astronomer who found it on the Palomar Digital Sky Survey plates.
