Description

This faint planetary nebula, also known as HDW 1, is located 1000 light years away in the constellation of Cassiopeia at a declination of +74 degrees.  It is a magnitude 16.4 PN which spans 6 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 2 light years, which is typical for a PN.

Its EGB designation is from a 1984 paper by Ellis, Grayson, & Bond entitled "A search for faint planetary nebulae on Palomar sky survey prints".  The nebula had been identified as a bright nebula 20 years earlier but the 1984 paper confirmed it as a planetary nebula.

The nebula is deformed from the typical circular or elliptical shape, likely from interaction with the ISM.  Like many PN, the HII signal was stronger in the rim while both HII and OIII were of similar strength in the central region.

The progenitor star is obvious as the only tiny blue star in the nebula.
