Description

It might seem that the most interesting galaxies in the sky are NGC or Arp objects, but there are some exceptions.

This object is a tiny pair of merging spiral galaxies located 180 million light years away in the constellation of Camelopardalis at a declination of +72 degrees. This magnitude 14 object spans 1.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 80,000 light years.

The Hubble image reveals that these are two spiral galaxies, viewed edge-on, in the process of merging. Tidal star streams from the merging extend well beyond the edges of both disks. Blue and purple tones are seen in areas of star formation kicked off by the interaction.
